Oil & Gas Ecological Assessment for Tasman Bay, Golden Bay, Marlborough Sounds

Oil & Gas Ecological Assessment for Tasman Bay, Goden Bay, Marlborough Sounds
During negotiations prior to AWE drilling an exploratory well in Tasman Bay in 2010, it was clear that there were gaps in the data available for a full Assessment of Environmental Effects, as required by the RMA.
Friends and AWE then commissioned ecological consultant Simon Mustoe to develop a standard for any future assessments for oil and gas exploration applications. The Standard describes a process and examples for gap identification, and how full assessments might be made. Friends is not supportive of future exploration in the Top of the South Island.

Seabird, marine mammal and surface fish surveys of Golden and Tasman Bays.
August 2011.
Surveys of biological activity using a grid over Golden and Tasman Bays were made by members of Friends of Nelson Haven & Tasman Bay, Ornithological Society NZ and NIWA with a grant from AWE NZ Pty Ltd.
Overall use as well as "hot spots" were identified, which will be essential for future management decisions of this biological diverse area.  Further boat studies made in summer (November/December) and winter (August) 2013 will be posted on this website in future.
